Less is more, but where can I get more efficacy for less money?
Probably less than 5% of all topically applied formulations deliver their active ingredient effectively.
Wouldn't you like to pay less money to get more clinical efficacy out of your innovative and expensive active ingredients? That sounds too good to be true, but is now possible since the invention of the “Formulating for Efficacy” concept. In my 2003 IFSCC Conference Award winning paper, I described how you can optimise a formulation to enhance the delivery of active ingredients.
“Formulating for Efficacy” is a formulation strategy in which I calculate the optimal polarity of the oil or water phase in which your active ingredients are incorporated. Based on this, primary and secondary emollients that ensure maximum delivery are selected. In addition, the speed of skin penetration can be modified with the choice of the emulsifier. Moreover, I can simultaneously optimise skin delivery, skin sensory and formulation stability. With REACh coming up in Europe, there is a high probability that your products will need to be reformulated anyway.
Building on that concept, I recently identified that the concentration of the active ingredients can be reduced without a drop in clinical efficacy. This means that you can also obtain more efficacy with the same percentage of your active ingredient. Or, if you are really lucky, you may reduce its concentration and obtain more efficacy...
Finally, less is more!
So, why not make them more effective at less cost at the same time? I organise also formulation strategy workshops, I can provide tailor-made formulation studies based on the above principles, and I can support new raw materials with adequate application guidelines.
